Care after a sinus lift treatment

You may lose upper teeth. In this case, there are ways to replace these teeth, such as implants and artificial teeth. If you choose implant treatment to replace your upper jaw teeth, you may also need a sinus lift supplemental treatment. This is a complementary treatment for places where there is not enough bone in the jaw. For example, the jaw bone is small in the upper jaw. In case of treatment, you should consider post-treatment care.

How is sinus lift surgery performed?

  • The surgery is easily performed through the mouth.
  • Surgery is performed with local anesthesia without pain or discomfort.
  • After removing and raising the sinus membrane, bone powder, and grafting materials are placed in place.
  • The incision site is sutured after being covered with an artificial membrane or membrane.
  • Depending on the amount of bone loss, the implant can be placed in the desired location in the same session or 6 months later (successful bone graft).

Post-treatment care

This care can be categorized into several stages.

  • Cares should be taken immediately after sinus surgery.
  • Care is needed after surgery.
  • The care must be followed until the end of the treatment.

Care immediately after sinus lift surgery

As mentioned above sinus lift surgery is performed in the upper jaw for implant placement. Immediately after the operation, two very important and effective care should be taken in the continuation of the treatment process. These two tasks are:

Mouth wash

After the sinus lift operation, do not wash the wound area vigorously. In addition, never touch the wound. These actions may cause the wound to bleed again. After the sinus lift, gently rinse your mouth several times with a diluted salt water solution.

Check dressing and bleeding

A piece of sterile gauze is placed on the tooth extraction or operation site to reduce bleeding. This gauze should be kept on the scar for at least half an hour after the operation. This should be continued until the bleeding stops.

What should I not do after the sinus lift operation?

  • Do not put any pressure on the nose.
  • You should be careful of your sneezing and coughing for up to four weeks. If you have to sneeze, open your mouth to release most of the pressure.
  • Avoid playing wind instruments.
  • Don’t do activities where there is a possibility of injury to the mouth.
  • Limit movement and exercise in the first days.
  • Do not do vigorous physical activity in the days after the operation.
  • Quit smoking. Smoking reduces the chance of bone graft success.
  • Do not eat hard foods such as nuts, chips, and seeds in the first days.

What foods can’t I eat after sinus lift surgery?

  • Avoid chewing on the surgical site.
  • Protein intake is necessary for tissue healing.
  • Drink plenty of fluids to keep your body hydrated.
  • In the first few days, your food will probably be limited.
  • In the first few days, you should compensate for the lack of nutrition by increasing fluid intake.
  • You should drink at least 6 glasses of fluids a day.
  • After anesthesia, you should first start feeding with liquids and gradually eat solid foods.
  • It would help if you did not use a straw but drink water with a glass.
  • Sucking can make the bleeding worse.
  • You can eat any soft food.
